So, I was doing a bit of research on the whole rewrites situation this film was going through to try and make sense of the timeline of events:
-In June of last year, we got the announcement that Jake Schreier would be directing Thunderbolts.
-For about a few months after that, we didn’t get really any more news. That is, until around the end of November, where this comes up:
Thunderbolts villain leaks as rumors suggest rewrites are underway
The tweets in the article mentioning rewrites for this film are from November. This coincides with Bob Chapek being ousted from Disney and Bob Iger returning.
-In mid February, we get the announcement from Bob Iger saying that the release schedule for all Marvel projects is going to be slowing down quite a bit. About a couple weeks after that announcement, we got news that Steven Yeun was cast as Sentry.
-Then, only a week and a half ago, we got the report that Lee Sung Jin, creator of Netflix series “Beef”, had been brought on to rewrite the script for Thundetbolts. This is almost perfectly timed in conjunction with the release of his series, which, from what I’ve been hearing, has been very well received and is pretty critically acclaimed. Also, worth noting, Jake Schreier, who was announced to direct this way back in June of last year, also worked on the series, and Steven Yuen, who was cast in Thunderbolts as Sentry, also plays a main role in “Beef”.
-There was a rumor from Jeff Sneider that the entire previous script had been thrown out, which would line up with the rumor of rewrites going down all the way back in November. There was also a report that filming would start in June, which means that rewrites will have been going on for about 6 to 7 months. Plenty of time to come up with a complete shooting script.
So, from what I can gather, this isn’t just a simple rewrite of someone’s previous script. They’ve completely scrapped everything and are starting entirely from scratch.
