How much more does a smile or a very human reaction have to be ‘earned” when the importance of this element to Bruce is clearly set up, as is his concern over the situation?

The definition of camp is rather broadly and often incorrectly, applied around here. It's pretty much that simple.

I think it's unfortunate that a character having perhaps his most human moment is mocked for showing emotion in something other than a narrow, specific way.
