The people in the Alabama GOP defending him is absolutely disgusting. The auditor straight up didn't even try to suggest the claims weren't true, rather there was nothing wrong with the relationships because "older men married teen girls all the time in the Bible". If Alabama elects a minor-dating wannabe theocrat twice fired for refusing to follow the law over a distinguished civil rights attorney, there is truly no hope for them. They have reached "maximum deplorable".

Paul Reynolds, the Republican National Committeeman from Alabama, told The Hill that something about the timing of the accusation and the Post’s role breaking the story “doesn’t smell right.”

“My gosh, it's The Washington Post. If I’ve got a choice of putting my welfare into the hands of Putin or The Washington Post, Putin wins every time,” he said.

“This is going to make Roy Moore supporters step up to the plate and give more, work more and pray more."

Jonathan Gray, an Alabama Republican strategist, noted that Alabama Republicans are not willing to put their Senate seat at risk, arguing that they’d rather vote for anyone over a Democrat.

“I think they’d rather put Satan up there and then get him removed in the next election than lose the chance to correct what they think has been an injustice for eight years,” Gray told The Hill.

One of the reasons why America is a failed state is we did not finish the job after the Civil War. All Confederate leaders should have been executed as traitors, no monuments to any of them should have ever been erected, and all wealthy slave owning southern families should have had their land and wealth confiscated and given to former slaves as reparations. Union occupation of the treasonous South should have not ended for at least 50 years.

Although a lot of America is garbage and a lot of Americans are scum, the vast majority of people in the South and pretty much all Southern conservatives are complete and total filth. And I am from the South and have lived here all my life. I can testify as to how disgusting, vile and evil the people of this region are. And the further South you go, the worse it gets.

Rape and pedophilia is no problem at all to Southern conservatives. Maybe if he was raping boys they might have cared.

To be fair to Robert E. Lee, when he lost, he did encourage reconciliation and actually opposed building of Confederate monuments (the man had brains and realized what those monuments would lead to).

The lost lessons of the Civil War are both the fault of the North and the South. Admittedly the South more so, but the North was never as noble as people think.

Hell, MLK himself though that Chicago was worse than Birmingham.

I do agree that the South is socially backwards. I mean the only reason the South exists as a concept is due to slavery and even now, that identity is predicated on being different than the rest of the country post-Civil War. But I am more optimistic than you are. This kind of rhetoric is hysterical and unhelpful.

Not really. In fact, what I think should have been done after the Civil War is exactly how the Nazis were rightfully punished after WW II. The very worst of them were executed, reparations were paid to the families of their victims, and no monuments to Nazi leaders were allowed. I hold the views I have of Southern conservatives because they essentially are the same thing as Nazis, just without the power. Germany is the nation it is today in part because they were properly punished after WW II.

I don't think you really understand this era. Besides the fact that Lee was widely admired in the North, and beloved in the South, he was a voice of reason. Killing him would at best make an orderly surrender much harder, and at worst, cause an insurrection that would mean years more of fighting.

The reason Reconstruction ended is because the rest of the country got tired of footing the bill and because the economy went to hell in the 1870s. Also very few cared about fighting for the civil rights of black Americans.

You don't have the political will for this ambitious Southern Morgenthau plan in the 1860s.

Maybe you could have shot some of the fire eaters. I'll give you that. But this whole Katyn-style massacre of Confederate officers is just not realistic.

It is going to be interesting to see how McConnell reacts this week. If they fear that they will lose Strange's seat, he could very well try to accelerate his tax cuts. The problem is, then you start to run into the McCain problem. Paul is probably a planned for no.

Watch McConnell carefully. The donors are pushing hard for these cuts. So we will see what happens.

Racism within America has been ingrained for centuries, and even though progress was made after the Civil Rights Act and desegregation in the 1960s, there are still white Americans who felt that they are the superior race in the U.S., especially over minorities like blacks. The social ladder that minority groups have climbed over the years did little to ease that deep-rooted racist belief, and Trump's elevation to power merely brought those feelings to the fore-front. It's a problem that America realized but refused to acknowledged.
