Fantastic Four General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

Here’s what Feige said about including Fox characters.
We asked Feige whether Marvel would take a similar approach to introducing these[Fox] characters as they did for Spider-Man and Black Panther, two characters who were first brought into a Captain America movie before they spun off into their own respective solo films.

Kevin Feige: “Yeah, maybe. You know, oftentimes it just comes down to a specific character in a specific story and a specific way to introduce them," he said. "So sometimes, like with Spider-Man and Black Panther, that made sense. Then, other times, with characters like Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Thor, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man... it's fun to introduce them in their own movies first. So it just depends on the story we're trying to tell.”

I believe these are the only main roles in the current slate that have yet to be cast. Shouldn't be too long until we hear some news.

What's everyone's guesses for when we'll get announcements of the cast?

The fanboy in me hopes for August to coincide with the FF's 60th anniversary.
Probably SDCC but news could leak out before that.

I was thinking that we could get some hints or peeks into the FF or how they will get introduced during the upcoming Loki show. Someone may have already brought this up, but with Time Variance Authority being brought into the new series, that could lead to info about Kang. From there??

That would be a logical fit.

But I’ve been disappointed so far hoping for big reveals from the Disney+ shows, so I’m not expecting much.

Kang's comic book wife, Ravonna Renslayer, is being played in the Loki show by Gugu Mbatha-Raw. So it would make sense that we get either a Kang mention or sighting on the show.

 Good point.

SDCC is virtual this year. I wonder whether Feige will hold off on announcing anything then in favor of a Disney/Marvel Studios event later in the summer. This is Bob Iger's last year as Disney's chairman. He might want to go out with a final flourish, especially if D23 is canceled. A Disney-centric virtual event would be fun.

I'm wondering if it will be a young cast again or if it will be an older one.
I'd prefer older.
Reed and Ben would be in their late 30's early 40's.
Sue in early to mid 30's, and Johnny in late 20's.

Early twenties for Johnny would be nice to match Tom Holland.

I would love to see an older cast but with some exceptions marvel do love late twenties, early thirties casting for longevity

I don't mind them skewing younger as long Reed, Sue and Ben aren't teens like in the 2015 film. I want to see them grow into how the characters are today, so having them younger (like they started in the comics) makes sense.

Johnny a teen 16-19 (played by someone in their early 20s)
Sue in her 20s
Reed and Ben in their early 30s

With how long film development is, you'll blink and they're already close to the ages people are used to. By the second film these actors would already be 3/4 years older and the third film they'd be 6/8 years older (going by how long Marvel waits to give sequels nowadays).

If anything I'm now thinking starting younger is better.

 I agree with your ages and reasoning.

This is also close to what they were in the comics in FF #1 and would give us the ability to see the characters mature and develop.

I understand why people want to skip the origin and make them more like how they are today, but I think that would have the audience lose the possible connection they'd have with these characters. Skipping the origin is fine, but having the team practically fully formed from the outset means missing out on so much development. Look at MCU Spider-Man, even though it skips his origin he is still a newbie to all of this and does not have much experience. That's how the FF should be when we're introduced to them.

Growing with these characters is part of what gets people really attached. It's also why I want them to hold off on the kids for later films. Seeing the family grow is a special thing and skipping that would be a mistake. I can see it happening in an attempt to be different from the FOX films and I worry about that.

 Yeah, I don’t think we need an “origin” but I do want to see the characters and team grow and develop.

Like I've said before, people need to stop assuming that "origin story" must consist of two acts of not-being-heroic and trying-to-be-normal. And by "people" I definitely also include "film makers".

true. case in point: batman begins. sure we have seen batmans origin countless times but the way nolan executed it was near flawless and was superior to tim burtons origin story (but not burton's art direction)

We need Batman's Origin: The Untold Story. It can be a prolonged scene of Thomas and Martha Wayne getting shot with their whole life flashing before their eyes. The entire movie can take place in that split second as they think back about their whole life and all their regrets and unfulfilled dreams.

This is true. It all depends on how it’s executed. Origin stories, when done well can be fun to watch but even then I don’t think the F4 origin is interesting enough to devote an entire film to telling even if it could be done well like Raimi’s first Spider-Man or Nolan’s Begins. Instead of taking the most of the movie to tell that story again, I’d much rather see it handled in the form of a short opening animated sequence or a hologram college presentation re-enactment narrating by Reed(at least the part where they get their powers).

Actually, Begins is kind of a different case because if you think about it, up until that point there had never been a movie that did complete point a to b telling of his origin in any media. The most we ever see of the origin is flashbacks to his parents being murdered but the movies pre-Nolan like Batman 89 and the Schumacher movies only handled the origin in the form of short flashbacks - leaving any lingering questions about the rest of the origin like how Batman got his suit, or his training for the audience to fill in the blank on that themselves. Heck, even adaptions in other media like BTAS pretty much skipped the origin; relegating it to nothing more than references that Batman or some other character would make in dialogue. Begins is the only complete telling of Batman’s origin story on film, while F4 already has like three movies that told(albeit very badly) the complete origin from start to finish.

So it’s an apples and oranges comparison on your part. While theoretically another F4 origin movie could work, I also think Marvel won’t feel inclined to devote another entire movie on it since the previous movies have already done it, and they’re not interested in retreading too much ground the last movies covered. If Marvel does address the origin in any way it should be fairly brief and to the point, and not take an entire two hour movie to tell. Keep it short and sweet.

Marvel just released a new F4 figure line by Mezco. How do yall feel about the MCU uniforms looking like this? I find that Marvel tend to telegraph what direction they are leaning towards when it comes to upcoming projects via recent costume changes in comics or figurines. I am really digging the trenchcoat look for Ben

I like the color scheme, and I’d be really interested to see them do something like a relatively loose fitting cloth - as Kirby drew them in the early issues.

Everything bow is going to rubber-suits with too much texture and detail that I’d like to see them take a step back to something simpler.

But I’d have to see a real costume on a real person to see if it could actually work.

I've been trying to explain this for the longest time, particularly in regards to the X-Men. But some ppl ain't tryna that! :funny:

Just the way the MCU writes it's characters should be evidence enough; that the F4 won't be introduced as some seasoned, grizzled team. They may skip the barebones origin story (e.g. them getting their powers), but it's unlikely that they'd skip all of their formative development. We'll almost certainly see them coming into their own for the first time-- because this is how most movies are structured, and this is how you write a protagonist (in most cases).

I don’t think it’s very complicated at all.

Look at FF #1. There it is.

... though honestly I hope some of the FF #1 content happens in other films before we get the stand-alone.
