Batgirl 'Batgirl' movie? - Part 1

Out of curiosity, are there any characters you would like to see racebent? There are some I don't care much either way about and some that (putting aside the diversity element) might be good for variety's sake. Like, maybe it's because I'm not a die hard Cyclops fan, but after however many movies he's appeared in making him a POC might help to freshen things up a little.
I think people (including myself) are less vocal about characters they have little investment in. Like I didnt mind most of what was done with the MCU Spider-Man characters. I would rather Cyclops be played by a white man bc he's one of my favorites so I want to see him onscreen as he was envisioned in the books. I dont think they should swap him for variety sake. Why? To have a POC in the role as a lead X-man on film? Use Bishop for that and give him a push instead.

I wouldn’t mind a race-bent Scott, actually. If they cast a great black actor for the role, then I wouldn’t mind at all as long as that actor and writing/characterization is truthful to the source material. Being a white person has never been an integral part of the character as say being a black is to Storm’s character.

I would say that Scott Summers is one of the better candidates for a race-lift. His basic premise could be summed up as "Grew up without parents, and has to live his life with perfect self-control at all times less he be/be viewed as a danger by those around him". That maps very well to casting him as African American.

Relatedly. . . I tend to rank characters on a scale of 1-5 with regard to their ethnicity.

5: Absolutely must keep the same ethnicity as the source material. Changing it renders the character unrecognizable, or even non-sensical.

4. Could theoretically have their ethnicity changed, but it would introduce notable complications and changes. You probably shouldn't change their ethnicity, and if you do, be prepared for putting in a huge amount of overtime as a writer.

3. The ethnicity of the character is largely unimportant. Cast whoever you want.

2. Not only is the current ethnicity of the character not locked in, but there are clear benefits or opportunities to recasting them, in terms of theme and story. Strongly consider actively recasting them.

1. The current ethnic baseline of this character is an outright racist caricature in its construction. You probably should have second thoughts about using this character *at all*, and if you do, seriously, try to do something with the casting to make them less awful.

So, Black Panther would be a 5, and IMO Bruce Wayne would also be a 5 if a slightly softer one. Superman would be a 4, at least if he's the Clark Kent version. The Fantastic Four would generally be 3s, though Ben Grimm at least verges on a 4 ( he should be Jewish, and writers are way too comfortable erasing that ). Cyclops, as I described above, is a 2, both for his specific thematics and the general "X-Men are supposed to be about prejudice, it looks bad when they are all white dudes" angle. 1, well, take your pick of awful caricatures you'd like to forget existed, like the Mandrill.

Note: Obviously, a lot of this hinges on the specifics of *which* ethnicity you want to swap. Matt Murdoch's ethnicity is important, but mostly in the sense of his religiousity and poor urban upbringing. Changing him from Irish to African American, is not the same as changing him from Irish to Latino.

Great stuff! My ethnic casting flexibility tolerance checklist also includes the question "Do they resemble the comic book character when suited up?" No human being is going to perfectly resemble their cartoon counterpart, but can you get close enough for government work?

For this character, Ms. Grace looks awfully Batgirly to me when sporting the cowl. And while I didn't like MBJ as Johnny Storm given how (among other reasons) the character was unrecognizable in his FF duds, I think a lanky black guy with short hair and greying temples can get close enough to play Reed Richards.

I'm happy about JK Simmons. It would have been pointless to bring in a new actor.

Does this means it’s possible for more Batfleck in the future? :D
Rumors had it that by the end of the Flash movie the DCEU would be rebooted, and Batfleck would be replaced by Keaton(who would the take his place as the Batman of that universe going forward). Now it seems with this news the rumors of the Affleck being replaced with Keaton aren’t true, and the Flash movie is only a one-and-done appearance in order to say goodbye to the role for good. So the new Flash film could actually be Keaton’s swan song for the role instead of Ben’s(which it was initially believed to be).

I mean… Keaton’s Gordon is dead as Pat Hingle in real life has died. Unless, they retroactively merge the history Bat-fleck had with Burton Batman’s history I’m not sure Bat-fleck is done after Flash like initially assumed.

I can see Keaton sticking around for a Batman Beyond movie if the plan is to keep him around in a mentor type role. It is a different universe after all which will have no effect on the main DCEU timeline. Maybe WB can even entice on bringing Burton back to direct

I heard those rumors too but it never made sense to me. Why would Keaton’s Batman replace Affleck’s yet all the other characters of the DCEU stay the same? I would rather have Batfleck continue even if it’s through HBO Max movies.

Affleck seems done with all this. He wanted a "graceful exit" and The Flash has supposedly given him just that.

I'll be amazed if he sticks around, honestly. I really wouldn't get my hopes up.

As for Keaton, it's possible that his Batman crosses over to the new version of the DCEU and stays there. Who knows... it all sounds very messy.

Thank God for Reeves and The Batman.

so I guess this means Ben Affleck and Simmons Gordon have the same taste in women

game respects game

Wouldn't these two things be the same?
If Keaton replaced Affleck in a new DCEU, by definition, he would face actors from these last previous films, whether they were heroes (Miller, Gadot, Momoa) or their supporting characters (Connie Nielsen, Amber Heard, and well, Simmons).

Anyway, I never liked this idea of having a new timeline with a single character coming by a previous saga. It's justfeel too convoluted. And if the only purpose of that is just to have a Batman passing the torch to Batgirl, then just give Affleck some money to come back again. He's already done it twice since he said he was leaving the role...

I would have preferred to see a "Batgirl Beyond" movie revisiting the old Burtonverse... It just feels more fresh to me, despite bringing back an old licence. And I mean, just take a look back to this architecture of Gotham in Returns. All these statues and these infinite lines ...

Unless they are circling Keaton for an actual Terry McGinnis/Batman Beyond movie instead.

Bat-Fleck dies in The Flash and this version of Batgirl steps in to take his place for the DCEU timeline?
