Waited years to play FFX and ended up hating it with a passion. The only FF game I never finished.

RE: Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters

^Ethers (restores MP) were not in the original NES/Famicom Final Fantasy so that's a gameplay change there that was also in the later remakes that nerfed the game's difficulty.



^Eight-way directional movement was in none of the first six Final Fantasy games on the NES/Famicom and Super NES/Super Famicom so that's another change. The games were not designed for it.

At least the rearranged soundtrack sounds decent. Brief previews below.

Then you're stuck paying 2nd hand market prices for a legal copy.

The U.S. version of the GBA games are a bit bugged. Some of those bugs were fixed in the European versions, like the blatantly broken ATB system of US IV Advance.

it’s actually crazy how bugged these games have been since the NES/Famicom original, from bugs where your character stats are ignored that make the games harder to weird item duplication bugs that make the games really easy.

The pixel remasters I’ve read have made a lot of game balance tweaks and additions but I don’t know about any new gameplay bugs yet.

The FF1 pixel remaster got rid of the Peninsula of Power from previous versions where you could level up very quickly by exploiting some map tiles containing the wrong monsters of another continent.

RE: Pixel Remasters

There's unofficial fan patches/mods out there now for pixel and throwback typefaces for the text. When it gets ported to consoles and updated on PC/mobile they need a good pixel typeface for classic/retro and they should ditch the tiny Arial-like narrow one but keep the Japanese one for the 'modern UI' mode.

Some of the best pixel fonts I've seen so far:

Final Fantasy VI font (III U.S. in 1994):

I prefer the chunkier fonts to thin and wispy even among pixel fonts. But they're all better than the current default of the small and narrow HD font.

Until Square Enix fixes this, the PC will reign with its customizability by fans which consoles and iOS do not have.
