Okay Disney, heres the deal. The Brie Larson hate bandwagon is starting up already. We have 8 months to go I need a freaking trailer to offset the *******s.

I think 1st trailer will come either same week or the week prior to GOTG3 opening. Doubt it's gonna be any sooner than then

Disney did just let Criterion do a release for Wall-E, so they may be doing that now

I can’t see them licensing a big movie like BP or Avengers Endgame for a Criterion release though. Disney is honoring the licensing agreements Criterion made with 20th Century Fox for titles like The Princess Bride.

But I would love to see a show like “Buffy” get a Blu-ray release— and Disney’s not going to do that. Shout! would probably be up for it though.

I guess it's good in a sense that studios are waking up to the realities of streaming being the primary distribution model...

In the 'old' pre-pandemic days, movies still had multiple avenues of ancillary income to exploit. Remember that old joke about theatrical releases just being "expensive commercials" for the eventual afterlife of a film?

Movies that failed theatrically still had multiple chances to end up in the black after they left public exhibition. Studios had the 'secondary' exhibition market (drive-ins, dollar cinemas), network and specialty channel broadcasts, multiple physical releases, airplane exhibition, pay-per-view, video rentals, and so on.

A famous example of course was Showgirls, which went on to earn over $100 million from video rentals alone after a disastrous theatrical run...

Fast forward to the pandemic and studios are now realizing that putting all your eggs into the streaming basket isn't a viable business model in the long term. It's great for casual viewers but the churn is seriously eating into profits. I've subscribed in the past to streaming services with limited appeal just because there was something I wanted to watch, and then cancelled my subscription immediately afterwards. Meanwhile, that provider's assets are just sitting on the service not earning any extra income from other potential sources...

Some of us are collectors and enjoying owning the content we love. I don't blame Disney for taking a closer look at the reality of the situation. There's nothing wrong with exploring multiple avenues of distribution to maximize profits. Content is expensive, after all. May as well wring every last penny of profit to keep the bottom line healthy...

Funny that Sony never bothered with a streaming service. Maybe they were smart to just sit back and collect their licensing cheques. It's Sony though, so probably not smart.

But I would love to see a show like “Buffy” get a Blu-ray release— and Disney’s not going to do that. Shout! would probably be up for it though.

Ah my beloved Buffy. I would love a good blu ray release for the show. I'd want a proper remaster though, and it's probably not worth all the money that would take. There are problems with the HD streaming version. Bit of a hatchet job.

Showgirls made $100 million on video?! Wow, what a different time the 90s was for home video.

Look at Rocky Horror. A financial disappointment upon its initial release in mainstream theatres, but has since gone on to gross over $225 million in the "midnight movie" secondary market. And it's still playing in limited release around the world, 47 years after its debut!

Of course that film was a cultural anomaly, unlikely to be repeated in our current corporate, streaming environment. Studio consolidation means it's harder for movies to become grassroots hits, building in a region before breaking out into the mainstream.

Of course there are exceptions, with Smile and EEAAO being recent examples. But studios now are so concerned with franchise aspirations and brand/world-building that it's becoming harder and harder for something like the original Top Gun, Blair Witch, or Sixth Sense to break out organically and become a white-elephant blockbuster with the general public based on its own merits.

Sad...

Two questions: Which mutant is Jenna Ortega going to play in the MCU and how did SNL's costume department whip up a better "X-Men" costume than about 75% of the costumes in the Fox movies?

Just warms my heart to see the X-Men referenced in the mainstream. They're coming back...

20th Century remastered "The X-Files" for the Blu-ray release and they did a very good job overall with the remaster. Some bits were upconverted due to VFX but I think they did scan the original film masters. And it looks phenomenal.

I'm not surprised. Can't have any of those capes people winning our award!
I didn't expect it to win since Fraser got the Oscar last year for Dune, but Greig has established himself as the best young cinematographer currently working. He is the Deakins of his generation and ought to have at least gotten a nomination.

The lack of technical nominations for The Batman in general is a travesty, especially in light of an ugly Marvel juggernaut like Wakanda Forever getting so many riding on the coattails of its predecessor. Regardless of whether one liked The Batman as a film as a whole, the technical craftsmanship on display is phenomenal. The last blockbuster I can think of like it in that way is Fury Road.

The production design and Durran's costume design is all brilliant LOTR trilogy level world building. And then there is the wonderful visceral sound design.

:funny:

Would love to have her. It’s going to be interesting seeing what costumes they come up with for X-Men after getting used to extremely understated with the original Fox films.

Ah Yes, its Jenna Ortega's turn to be fan cast as MCU Xmen Mutant..It was the lead actress from Prey last year and the Stranger Things lead before that...Wonder who it will be next year.

Probably the right decision for once. There’s too many streaming services now for them all to succeed IMO.

Oh man. How I miss drive ins and dollar theaters! Reminds me of my courtship with my wife.

Such great memories!
