X-Men - Part 8

Things got real in today's X-Force and Maraurders.
Beast is looking to go full villian and Kitty pretty much was confirmed to be bi
Even more real would have been more accurate yeah. :D
The confirmation that Mikhail was the guy we saw a few issues back is nice. Even if that guy wasn't wearing a cape. And I loved everything about Marauders. Along with the main X-Men book that one is definitely my favorite by a mile. X-Factor is a blast as well.

I've been going through the Dawn of X line-up again and it really feels to me like New Mutants is the book with the biggest identity problem. If they would've been able to stick with the space storylines, they could've at least done something unique in this lineup, but of course, that moved with Hickman back to the flagship title.

It doesn't have a hook and the team doesn't really have a reason to exist. Marauders, Excalibur, X-Force, X-Factor, even Fallen Angles and Hellions have a much more clear goal and directive within the larger narrative. New Mutants almost feels like it just gets all of the rejects that don't make it into other books. It exists only because New Mutants is a property we've done before.

Then a lot of the missions they've been doing was stuff that honestly could've been done by other teams as well. Marauders could've brought Angel and Beak to Krakoa. That's kinda their thing. And we also have Cable apparently diving into a "teen revolution" on Krakoa. At least the last Ed Brisson issue was better than the rest. I just hope that post X of Swords they take it in a new direction.

I mean Excalibur didn't start off very strong for me, but it feels like they've really found their footing with issues 9-11, heading into X of Swords. It's also most likely the comic that will feel the long-term effects of XoS. So I guess things could still be turned around for NM as well.

New Mutants is the book I'm most annoyed with too. It's telling cookie-cutter paint-by-the-numbers X-men stories when every other book is trying something new. On top of that, I really question Brisson's taste in characters when he uses Beak, Nova Roma, and Glob. I really want a slice-of-life book about living in the Sextant.

Yeah, I'm on the verge of dropping New Mutants. It just has such an absurdly over-sized cast and Brisson seems largely disinterested in doing anything interesting with the actual New Mutants. Hardly anyone has actually been written memorably here, save for Boom Boom, who I love, Glob and Cypher. There are pieces of exciting content that keep me hanging on, but like you said, it doesn't seem to have a purpose other than a dumping ground for mutants who haven't fit in on any of the other teams.

All the other books are adding to the overall narrative of Dawn of X and NM simply isnt. It makes no sense bc we are about to go into full crossover mode and Brisson has done nothing to build that up. There was a pretty big twist dropped in the GS issue yet Cypher has no presence in the book and Warlock hasnt come up at all. I dont get it

OMG, New Mutants is getting a NEW WRITER, New lineup and New Direction.
Vita Ayala takes over & Rod Reis returns!

Im here for this!

I like how they handled Hellions and Giant-Size Storm had some good moments. Now for the X of Swords preludes...
Excalibur was pretty well written. Rictor and Apocalypse were obviously highlights. This book has come a long way in the last four issues.

As for X-Men, the stuff with Rockslide will obviously become important in the future, but that is definitely interesting.

The rest of it was some pretty exposition-heavy. I'm not sure if we really needed all this information up front, but I guess time will tell. It feels like a lot of this was presented now to paint a picture that isn't quite accurate to the situation that our merry mutants will find on the other side once they get to Amenth.

For now, at least, we've been presented with the Mutants of Arakko fighting Annihilation and the armies of Amenth. The parallels between Krakoa and Arakko here weren't exactly subtle, but I did like it.

Let's see where all of this goes next week in X of Swords: Creation.

Also very happy that New Mutants is getting a second chance with fresh blood!

Fairly certain the expansion and then delay of X of Swords caused some havoc in the schedule.

I finally picked up X-Factor, and I'm honestly really liking it. It's fun to read and the art is great.
Also, Daken. That's always a win for me.

I like Magik but it feels like she is popping up in a lot of X-Books at the moment. I wondered if she was getting spotlighted so much due to the New Mutants movie coming out. Writers have almost 99% of every mutant character ever created at their disposal so I would of thought we would see a lot more different mutants featured across the books.

She definitely is overexposed but I dont think its due to the NM film bc that was forever delayed and its date was notoriously unreliable. Its not like Marvel has been doing anything with the other NM characters worth noting. She's just a popular character that writers love to use. I especially hated how she stole the thunder from M and Angel in Empyre when she technically wasnt even a part of X-corp

The first book to come out of XOS has been announced

I love seeing Magik in all the books tbh.

Oh Dave from Krakin’ Krakoa is going to have a blast with this one. He theorized that we'd get a new S.W.O.R.D. book soon literally 2 days ago.

The first chapter of X of Swords was HOX/POX levels of awesome. This was such a strong start to the crossover. Usually the "Alpha" type issues tend to be slow as they set the stage for the event that takes place in the main books but this got the ball rolling and it didnt stop. I LOVE the team of X-men assembled. Hickman resisted the urge to use Magik and even Wolverine and less utilized characters got a chance to shine especially Monet and Polaris, the two breakouts. Monet in particular was great here.

Saturnyne stepped up as a major threat and I love the set up for this Contest of Champions story with a twist. Im here for it and cant wait. Now I see why SWORD was announed as it got teased in this issue.

I was afraid that Jean would take a backseat here but she, Scott and Cable have a subplot which Im sure will carry over to his book.

Oh and Larraz art was outstanding here. He pairs well with Hickman.

Nothing really negative to add. This was a 10/10 and I can only hope the quality is maintained throughout which may be hard with over 20 parts but one can hope. The bar has been raised

Okay, catching up on my books. I will get to the others in a bit, but I need to talk about Hellions. That was great. I am liking how they are using Psylocke, and she is becoming her own, unique character. Greycrow is interesting, with how he is dealing with the Marauders.

But Havok is definitely the standout. I like the issues he is having, and is likely the only remnants of Axis remaining. And then there was the interaction with Scott and Alex. Cyclops was one the first X-men I loved. And then I actually read the kerfluffle of X-factor. Man, I felt for Maddie. I've always been denied Maddie and Scott interacting together in the few times she has been resurrected. I do look forward to her returning. At this point, I think only Mystique has more justification for burning down Krakoa than Maddie.

And good ol'Sinister still loving his Summer's angst.

I like Creation, though I will admit that the actual tournament arc stuff was the least interesting part of it. I'm curious where this will lead and what else they've got in store for us. Though to be perfectly honest this still doesn't feel like a 22-part story. Suprise me, Hickman. :cwink:
