no clue who he was or where he came from , but became more popular then Luke

and then the prequels came out , and the thrill was gone

If Marvel plays this right, people are going to be intrigued by Doom and want to see more of him and know more about him, but Marvel needs to be disciplined in what they reveal and not lose some of the mystique of the character just because there will likely be interest in and demand for a Doom film.
 
I don't think that Boba Fett was ever more popular than Luke. Also, it wasn't the prequels that imploded Fett's popularity. Rather, it was his quick, cartoonish death in the Sarlacc pit that killed him and his mystique. His appearance as a kid and a clone came long after rabid fan interest in him had died.
