I'm surprised Marvel would've lifted the embargo this early if they knew the reviews were bad

All this talk of "Marvel is dead" is really depressing the f*** out of me
The anticipation of future MCU films is the one thing that has propelled me through the past few (dark) years, sad as that is to say

May have to try to take time away from the whole internet for a while

I feel ya, BoredGuy. I'm an MCU nerd through and through, and while I don't believe that "Marvel is dead", seeing the movie that is suppose to kick off the Kang saga - fail, is very depressing. Still optimistic, but this one hurts.

I wouldn't read too much into the RT%. The average of critics scores, for now, is something like 5.9 of 10, or just slightly below 3 out of 5. Marvel generally has overperformed in % vs. rating in the past. This probably isn't as big a critical adjustment as the % indicates.

Its still lower than Thor: The Dark World (6.2/10), which was for a long time viewed as the nadir of the MCU.

Critics were incredibly kind to that movie. I've no idea of how it earned such a pass other than the novelty of the shared universe. And a post-Avengers sugar high.

You can't look at these things in a vacuum. In addition to the Avengers hype you have to take into account that critics were mostly used to far worse comic book movies. Prior to the MCU, Marvel movies were mostly misses (with the exception of Raimi's first two Spider-Man movies and the first two X-Men films directed by Singer). If you were a movie critic at the time you had lived through Daredevil, Elektra, Ang Lee's Hulk, Punisher War Zone, Spider-Man 3, Last Stand & Wolverine Origins, FF & Ghost Rider movies, Catwoman, Green Lantern and Jonah Hex. Even the weaker Phase 1 and Phase 2 MCU movies were good in comparison. Yes, even Thor The Dark World.

That may be true to an extent, but that seems to be treating superhero movies like they were an entirely separate genre from fantasy / science fiction action adventure. Nolan's Batman movies and Inception, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Casino Royale, 300, and even Harry Potter were contemporaries or near enough.

But, needless to say, even in just the superhero genre, the bar has been raised.

And that's the thing. What passed 10 years ago might not get a pass today because we've experienced good movies in the genre and expectations are raised across the board.

Im extremely shocked and even more concerned about this rating for Ant-man 3 and what is suppose to paint as a clearer picture for the MCU going forward. Phase 4 was overall awful no matter how you paint it and this is not a good start to phase 5. If I see this on Saturday and its just as bad as she hulk, ms marvel and thor love and thunder and to some extent Dr strange then I might seriously consider calling for Kevins job.

you cannot stumble this bad post avengers endgame

Besides the truly unremarkable villain, I think most of The Dark World is fine. I never understood the hate for it. I could easily rewatch it over many other modern superhero movies any time.

The problem is the script.

Its like they randomly got suck into the Quantum Realm and didn't get much character development while trying to get out of it. There's also nothing special between the relationship of Scott and Cassie here, the way it was teased in the trailers. Wasp was a tag along daughter/girlfriend. Hank was there for the Army ants nothing more. I don't even what eXactly they were trying to do with Darren, that character didn't need redemption.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Thor 2 wasn't just mediocre, it was boring.
Eternals OTOH was definitely interesting and brought something fresh into the MCU despite its flaws.

I would split the difference: they have *different* flaws, which means different people will like or dislike Thor 2 vs Eternals for those different reasons.

They really should have brought in the X-Men and Fantastic Four after Endgame.
I mean okay.

But thats not going to be the way to prevent a poorly reviewed/critical panned MCU movie. If those two got the writers of Eternals and this new movie, the reaction from fans/people would have been a lot way worse...

I refuse to believe this is worse than the 2nd Ant -Man movie which was incredibly bland.
That's what I'm thinking as well. Ant-Man and the Wasp could have skirted around critics because they were on a post-Infinity War Marvel high. Granted, I don't think Ant-Man and the Wasp deserves a rotten score but 87% is WAAAAAY too high. I was actually surprised when I double checked it because I thought it was in the mid-70s.

I understand this sentiment, but I actually prefer Marvel take their time with those properties to get them right than rush them. Feige understands how important these characters are, and I kind like we’re slowly building towards them.

I agree. The CGI in TDW is also miles better than in any Phase 4 movie (especially Thor: Love and Thunder). Say what you want, but the funeral scene is genuinely beautiful to behold:

I heard Majors was the only bright spot. And MODAK was terrible, and looked terrible lol.

I have watched movies that got rotten scores I enjoyed a lot more than AM&TW which was just totally bland and pretty pointless apart from the credits scene.

Unpopular opinion, but I found A LOT of the phase 2 & 3 Marvel film's rotten score to be WAAAAY too high. Especially if it was anything other than BP, and Winter Soldier.

Yes. You could tell they were struggling with sequels at that point but you can also tell (now) that they really took the time with each movie. The studio wasn't churning out shows and movies left and right.

Absolutely. And also there was at least an attempt to tie TDW in with the over-arching narrative of Thanos and the Infinity Stones. The post-credits scene with the Collector was the first time we ever heard the words "Infinity Stones" mentioned in the MCU IIRC. So even though the movie itself was mediocre, people were still excited because there was a sense that we were building to something epic and awesome.
