SlackBrian, that's kind of my point. These "focus groups" don't reflect reality and the Hollywood suits are oversensitive about things like this.
At the end of the day, THE FIRST AVENGER was a silly and unnecessary subtitle.
To me Captain America as a character rises above petty political discourse and he represents that part of America we all love and want to believe in. He's a character that is read and beloved not just in the USA but around the world. His ideals are universal, not just American.
How do you think the majority of American would react to a hero called Commander Soviet. You have to remember CA is a Nationalistic hero. He will only be as popular around the world as the Country he represents. If they rolled out CA during the Bush admin his world box office would have tanked but Obama is relativity popular right now. Obama's baggage didn't drag CA down. As long as foreign people don't currently hate the country the Nationalistic Character wont be drug down by all the bag and bad press of the country.
