The Official Green Lantern Rumors/Speculation Thread - Part 1

I would go with an older Hal but instead go for someone younger than Cruise

I wonder how much longer they will keep these boards lol

Nothing has been officially announced dead yet! (Though when was it ever really official? I guess announcing David Goyer and Justin Rhodes working on the script was something...)

A TV series and a movie are two separate things. One doesn't cancel out the other. We can still get a GL movie. There will be a lot more overlap with all these streaming services now.

Like how that’s worked out so great for The Flash lol.

look we’ll see

yeah we will so any sort of proclamation is a bit early.

Here is an article from back in August. They got it right that Berlanti would be making an HBO Max Green Lantern series:

Rumor: Greg Berlanti Developing Green Lantern Corps HBO Max Show Featuring Kyle Rayner
(John F. Trent August 29, 2019)

A new rumor suggests Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti is developing a Green Lantern Corps show for HBOMax starring Kyle Rayner.

The rumor comes from TVO at The Lords of the Long Box.

He reports, “Greg Berlanti is developing a Green Lantern Corps TV show for HBOMax featuring everybody’s favorite Green Lantern Kyle Rayner.”

TVO explains that Hal Jordan is hands off because they plan to use him in the movies. He then points to the idea that Arrow’s John Diggle is really John Stewart in disguise. TVO notes, “John Stewart is already on Arrow with John Diggle discovering last season who he really is, if you guys have been paying attention. So we don’t know where that’s going to go. Remember John Diggle’s fathers name is Stewart. So watch out for that.” He continues, “John Stewart Green Lantern will temporarily be seen during the Crisis crossover.” He adds, “Otherwise he’s being held back as well.”

TVO then discusses why it’s going to be on HBO Max, “I’m being told it’s going to be on HBO Max because that’s the one that could give it the best budget. They don’t want to have to put it on The CW because The CW just wouldn’t do it justice.”

Pretty sure they got that info from the Reddit leak (which turned out to be accurate on multiple things), and the original Reddit leaker then stated they were wrong about Kyle and that the powers-that-be hadn't settled on which GL would star yet.

I would love for it to focus on Kyle, but I don't particularly trust Berlanti to deliver anything more than CW quality. If I do finally get a show that focuses on Kyle, I'd want someone with a little more chops at the helm.

I do wonder if the shortcomings of Berlanti’s shows come down to budget and needing to stretch each season out to 22 episodes or so. I wonder if working with a higher quality network like HBO will allow him to craft better material.

In Berlanti’s defense, I will say that he has done an overall good job with characters. For example, I’ll take his Barry Allen over whatever Zack Snyder and Ezra Miller cooked up in their meth lab. That’s not to say he’s perfect (Heatwave, for example, is such an awful character that I literally feel embarrassed for Dominic Purcell when I watch him). But maybe with a better studio and perhaps better acting talent he can deliver a worthy GL show.

I actually reckon Kyle is perfect for berlanti. He can make him a lot more distinctive than Hal or John whereas others writers might just make him a sidekick

Eh, Berlanti had his shot without CW limitations for the GL movie he already did. It wasn't much better.

Berlanti is good for TV, I guess. I don't have any confidence in him for DC movies. Unless he suddenly ups his game for the GL and Superman TV shows. But I think the TV medium suits him fine. His style might suit something like a Booster Gold and Blue Beetle movie, if it is light and comedic, but that could end up on streaming.

Granted, the GL movie and its changes and problems went far beyond Berlanti.

Beyond embracing the darker undercurrents of the DC canon, the company is also revisiting characters that they believe were ill-served by previous big screen adventures. “Green Lantern Corps” remains a priority despite the fact that 2011’s “Green Lantern” was a high-profile commercial disaster. Johns is delivering a script at the end of the year. The project may be presented to Abrams and Bad Robot to see if the company would be interested in producing the picture. However, Greg Berlanti, another major talent on the Warner lot, is partnering with Johns on a “Green Lantern” television show. There’s speculation that relationship could lead to his involvement in a feature film.

Oh, Berlanti was involved with the Reynolds GL movie? I didn’t know that. It seems like everyone loosely connected to DC had a hand in that mess.

I remember reading that the story/script Berlanti and Johns worked on was greatly altered. In the original story, for instance, more of the Lanterns arrive on Earth and help Hal battle Parallax. Berlanti also didn't have the success of his TV shows then yet, so had less say.

As for Geoff Johns, I trust him with the GL lore, but he would need a lot of help to get that story movie-ready.

According to that infamous Vulture article, Berlanti was shut out of the creative process of the GL movie pretty early on despite his name being attached, and was apparently still a bit bitter about it when Johns (who himself was only allowed to be "consultant and cheerleader" on it because he was still at DC and not WB) approached him about TV possibilities that led to the Arrowverse, so maybe they see the show as their chance at a do-over where they actually get to do it their way this time.

Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge in Riverdale) could make a great Jessica Cruz, as suggested by @terry78 in a different thread.

I kinda want a Justice League Animated Series John Stewart to be Green Lantern...
because nostalgia.

Also because I don't think people have forgotten Ryan Reynolds' GL yet.
