Has VAR been a success though? I feel like it's been a bit of a **** show honestly. I'm all for decreasing the amount of mistakes made but when you have goals like the one Sheffield scored against Aston Villa just a few weeks ago ruled out despite everyone and their grandma clearly seeing it was a goal, you really start to doubt technology.

So far I think which situations go to VAR and which doesn't seem super random and you have the most clear cut decisions ever being looked at 5-6 times but then something suspect happens and they don't even look at it a second time. I think also it shouldn't have to take 10 people in a VAR-room watching replays from 10 different angles which sometimes takes 3-4 minutes to get a call right.

Overall in my opinion, yes. Still needs tweaked & improved as it's far from perfect, not only needs to be quicker, but it also needs to be more consistent with similar decisions. VAR should have stepped in & told the referee that the ball had clearly cross the line in the Sheffield United/Aston Villa game regardless of what the goal-line technology was telling him or in the referee's case, not telling him.

I also want VAR to be capable of intervening if there has been any incorrect decision (or even non-decision) made on the pitch if it's clear.

Mic the referees &/or VAR referees up also like the NFL, so they can announce exactly how they view an incident so there is better clarity for fans.

VAR has only just started out, and it's been a rough introduction. I think long term it will be great for the game. All these VAR adjudicators are new additional staff for the game so gradually people will build experience and adapt to the needs of football. I always wanted an extra level of checks available for the referee and I think the refs and VAR guys just need to work on when is best to check and when is best to let go. They should have the good of the game at the forefront of their mind rather than being ultra-jobsworths.

Sports like rugby and cricket where the officials are mic'd up encourages them to be professional and methodical and is also great for the fans to see the step-by-step process behind decisions and remove the mystery. I think this is an important step to bringing football refereeing up to the standards of those sports.

There's two things i'd do to fix VAR.... give the checks a time limit (30 seconds only) and have the ref's mic'ed up so they can replay the message after scrubbing for language

Yeah, they definitely need a time limit. If they can't decide within that time limit then it's not obvious enough. Give the attacking side the benefit of the doubt in any situations where they can't decide within the time limit. It would also make it exciting for fans to watch the clock tick down knowing a decision one way or the other is guaranteed by then. It would be similar to cricket where teams have a time limit within which to review a decision or they lose the opportunity.

The only downside of VAR for me personally is not being able to celebrate goals anymore. You're waiting for 2 minutes to see the VAR check and maybe it's a 50/50 chance the goal is removed. It's one of those things where you want things to be fair and if a goal isn't fair it should be disallowed, but on the flip side it sucks a lot of that 'in the moment' emotion out of the game. I feel like this season I definitely watched games feeling more emotionless than before even if the games themselves were good.

Agreed with this yeah. It’s not quite the same celebrating post VAR as it is in the moment. This is a bit like when watching films as a kid and seeing the first few fakeout deaths in films, I then didn’t believe characters in other films had died when they actually had died, until the end of the film by when the emotion was 1/100 of what it should have been. Once you celebrate a “winning” goal like a fool and have it called off a couple of times, you then get wary even for genuine goals.

Maybe it is because I watch the NFL and am use to replay, but I still celebrate goals. I remember celebrating goals in the past that got taken off do to a later call and that never stopped me from celebrating. If anything, I kind of celebrate twice. The goal and the VAR decision if it's close. The vast majority of goals are clear and obvious, so VAR doesn't really come into play.

Bruno looked exhausted. So many of them did really. That was all guts out there today, and I am proud of them for it. We should probably let everyone have the next month off, and prepare for next season. But I expect these guys getting dragged out to lose in the Europa League semi. :funny:

Also we definitely need Sancho imo.

What do you think the chances are Villa stay up next season, especially with Grealish probably off?

Have we even got any fit CB's to rest Maguire and Lindelof? :funny: I'd definitely be playing Fred, Mctominay, James, Mata, Igalho and Lingard as the 6 ahead of the back 4, we need to rest the main players more than we need to win a 2nd EL title.

Absolutely, plus another holding midfielder and a CB, otherwise we'll be scrapping purely for 4th as Chelsea are strengthening and City and Liverpool are alreajdy well ahead.

I highly doubt it, he's carried them 90% of the season and i doubt they can get the quality to replace him even if they get a big fee for Grealish.

I think Villa could stay up without Grealish because they seem eager to invest and as great as he was for them, i think some of their signings and their manager has gotten a grasp on the league. However with that said, it also depends on how good the promoted teams are and what they make of their seasons. A player like Grealish would be great for Arsenal or Spurs I think, but I feel like the big teams that can afford him are also the ones that would need him the least.

Just read this morning that Arsenal are trying to get Partey for 25m + one of their players while Atletico wants 50m. 50m isn't even that bad for a player like Partey, and I guess Arsenal will have to work wonders to get any good signings done without proper funds.

Lovren transfered to Zenit. Is Lovren who so much better than Ramos?

Yeah, I think Villa will be better next season, although the promoted teams like Leeds also might date better than the likes of Norwich did.

That Sanchez deal was a disaster from start to finish, I've even read in some places Mourinho didn't even want Sanchez & given what LvG has said in regards to some of the transfers during his time at the club & how some weren't players he actively suggested the club pursue I'm inclined to think that the Sanchez deal was another 1 of old Ed's brainstorms to sell shirts rather than a player the manager actually thought could help him.

Either he is sold, or he should be a rotation option in the squad. I think loaning him to Inter was foolish considering United are paying most of his wages.. there also was a point this season if I recall when Martial & Rashford were both injured meaning we could have used him. Point being, we shouldn't pay any of his wages for him to go on loan & play elsewhere.

Brentford won the second leg of the playoff semi against Swansea 3-1 and are now in the final.

I don't know if anyone here has been watching Zlatan during his return to Milan, but while he isn't quite what he use to be, he's been pretty flippin' great. Even at almost 39, he can still ball at the top level in Europe.
