England took the penalties like they played the match. Scared. England had all the advantages. They were at home, with a bunch of people who shouldn't have even been in the stadium. They scored early. And yet, they played scared. Southgate asking cold players to take pens, was bad. Saka who looked terrible, was worse.

I just don't understand why you'd try and place it against that guy, his wingspan is huge if he goes the right way and it isn't in the corner he's saving it.

You're right though, a huge opportunity missed.

The amount of racist abuse about to come to Rash, Jadon and Saka's way... I don't even want to know.
I already saw some on a SWEDISH forum where the N word was thrown around and various comparisons to primates. I can only imagine how much worse it will be in England.

In general I feel like substitutes tend to miss penalties more often than than players who have their head in the game. Southgate did well to take England to the final but in the end being a bit of a coward and going so much focused on a defensive lineup and wasting so much attacking talent kinda cost them.

Why especially Rashford?

I just feel like Rashford as a more senior player (only 23 but way more apps for both club and country than Sancho or Saka) should be expected to score a penalty. A penalty miss is bad no matter what but for all the talk of Rashford being mentally "there" and wanting to win things and so on, that penalty miss is a lot more disappointing than a 19 year old Saka coming out of Arsenal who are happy to finish 8th.

I really hate our world sometimes.

Cruel ending for England, in particular I feel bad for Rashford & Sancho, 2 of England's best players hardly had a kick the whole tournament, thrown on in the final minute of extra time just to take penalties. Gutted for Saka also missing, however at least he had some time to gave an impact in game.

Surprised Saka & Maguire actually hit penalties in 1st 5, I'd have thought Sterling & Grealish would have been all over it. Although Harry Maguire's penalty was the best of the lot.

Italy deserved it though, best & most consistent team in tournament. England were just too cautious today & indeed whole tournament. Having players like Grealish, Rashford, Sancho, Bellingham to name but a few, get so few minutes, is criminal.

Chiesa really was amazing the time he was on in the final. He kept Italy going forward, and while he didn't score the goal, I felt like Italy scoring was down to his constant work. He deserves his winners' medal.

Maguire's penalty was legit perfect. Broke the camera and everything.

Saka is probably gonna get a lot of crap but Rashford and Sancho deserves more blame, especially Rashford. But I'm sure most blame will go on the 19 year old.

None of them deserve any blame. Takes big stones to even go take any of those penalties in a game this big.

Sorry but Rashford one of our best players? Since when? Agree Sancho should have had more time but before the tournament Rashford was in the same bracket as Sterling.

I was scratching my head when I saw him walking up but maybe he should be United's primary penalty taker if Bruno isn't playing. :D

In fact I'd be happy with it because he doesn't do any daft stutters like Bruno, Rashford or Pogba.. he just lashes it into net.

And that's probably my biggest disappointment, we didn't make enough of their best player being off the pitch.

Going to be real. The worst thing that could of happened for England, is two soft draws in a row at 2018 and 2020 and not winning something. Because now they are stuck with Southgate, who manages like a coward. It's like United with Ole.

So.. Am I the one who bring this into discussion? English stadium crows was absolutly horrorble through the whole tournament, and they even raise there bad behaviour. With violence.

Since always, he had like 30 odd goal contributions at club level last season, Sancho was similar. Should have had more minutes overall, especially considering England struggled to score/create pretty much the whole tournament, but definitely early on in groups.

I mentioned it in passing earlier. So many fans in England are so trash. We are lucky to have the fans we have here.

Sorry man I can't help but feel that there's some red tinted glasses there. He's not even close to being in the same conversation as Sancho last season. No one outside of Manchester is going to be saying we needed more Rashford over Grealish, Sancho and Foden.

Man I really though England was gonna bring it home. I game with some UK friends of mine that I’ve been close with for almost 10 years. So upset for them of course and have been speaking to them since the loss, just sucks. Oh well excited for World Cup next year.

I think Rashford and Sancho should have come on in the second half, one for Kane and the other for Mount. Italy was playing a back line built for them, and Southgate refused. The Henderson sub was bad, and Saka was clearly not up for it today for whatever reason.

Too close! But I won't complain after being so bored last summer. :hehe:

Is it just me, or did all the England players take their pens the same way? That wasn't Rashford's usual method. Wonder if that messed them up.

In Grealish, Rashford & Sancho they'd about a combined 80 goal contributions last season between them. So when Kane, Sterling, Foden, Saka & Mount were struggling to get anything going, which they were especially in the groups, they should have been swapped out & got more minutes.

A team that has as many good goalscorers & creative players that England had available to them with numerous possible combinations, should not have struggled against Croatia, Scotland & Czech Republic especially.

Damn, the more you want things to change the more they stay the same. Thought it was meant to be for us this time but its back to missed pens, dodgy tactics, bad behavior by English "fans" and no doubt online racism for some players in the morning. *sigh*

Ah well it was fun again for a while at least and we got closer than we ever have but it feels like a missed opportunity and just going round in a big circle. Glad its over now though, it was a poor game in honesty sadly, as finals often are, and Italy deserved it for the way they have played most of the tournament and in this game mostly so congrats to them anyway. Still a few deflated feeling for a few days ahead with no doubt depressing stories to be told. Its the hope that kill's.

I'm with you on pretty much everything you've written. I just don't think Rashford can be classed as one of England's best players, I don't see that from his last couple of years in an England shirt. When the post mortem comes I don't think anyone will really be saying that this tournament needed more Marcus Rashford before anyone else.
