Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 57

It's actually really depressing how much a show as fun, inoffensive and entirely devoted to pleasing people as The Mandalorian gets weaponized in such an ugly way by the worse elements of SW fandom. I wonder how they'll feel in the unlikely scenario that show ever does anything remotely subversive or God forbid woke :funny:. It's like a certain set of people don't love the show, what they love is that it's not the sequel trilogy and doesn't contradict their religion-like convictions about what silly space wizard children's films should or shouldn't be.

I don't think it will even though it was probably the original intent because Disney currently seems afraid of the sequel trilogy era but, Man, especially if it gets into "Origin of the First Order" stuff towards the end and starts engaging with the sequel era...
Did you not watch the second season finale? The rescue team outside of Din were all women, and they emphasized it. Not that I am complaining outside of Gina Carano being there, but it was very obvious.

It's not about his race. I didn't say anything about his race. Why think that's what I meant? I was speaking on him, as a writer and about Green Lantern, not Superman. I assumed he had a connection to a version of Superman, in writing. I assume most people, white or black or whathaveyou, don't have a connection to writing Superman in the way that I mean, though.

He just finished up a 2 year stint on Captain America. Everything I've seen has been its been a solid run. Especially given the state of Cap that he inherited him from (post Secret Empire). Given his run on Captain America, I can easily see why he would be a pick to write Superman, regardless of ethnicity.

wonder how people would react if they cast Asian or Latino actor for black character.

[points to New Mutants]

That is a very interesting question and I want to find out what will happen then.
Holy lack of historical context you two. Do you have like no knowledge of US history and the treatment of minorities here? Here is a hint. If you put all the major lack, Asian, Latin, Indian, Middle Eastern, etc. characters all together, they wouldn't even make up the amount of major white characters from a company like DC.

Do you guys want Watts to return to direct Spider-Man movies after F4?

I’ll ask everyone except @Nardz937 since I already know his answer. :funny:

I love his spiderman movies and think the stans don't deserve him. I hope the third one is as good as the first two. But I want someone else to direct the next trilogy. I'm tired of seeing spiderman fans complaining whenever the man's name is mentioned, even when it has nothing to do with spiderman. You guys better hope the next director makes a movie that is well received by both critics and fans.

I feel having multiple versions of the same character in the same medium would cultivate a lot of resentment from within the fanbase.
But hat's how I remember comics being when I was growing up. It's always been a hodge podge of continuities and origins and one-offs and elseworlds and what-ifs and cross-overs and limited runs. It's one of the things I like about it.

I am sitting here waiting like

I’m like Ta-Nehisi Coates writing? You KNOW what time it is. Interesting choice.
There will be an epic meltdown, I wouldn't wish that on any black actor. They should just keep the character white, but I'll support whoever they decide to cast.

i thought i had some but apparently not lol
our country have enough problems to worry about so cut me some slack will ya?
i was just curious.

And you know what, if they happen to give us Black Superman, please keep that same energy and give us Black Lois Lane too. Just make all the certain fanboys mad. Someone like Taraji Henson or Lupita could nail that role.

I would love to see a black superhero love story like theirs represented on screen.
They would never do it. Hollywood has this obsession of putting black characters in interracial relationships. Except for Black Panther, I can't remember a blockbuster with two black leads in a romantic relationship.

I really love the book of his that I’ve read, but what I’ve heard of his Panther run gives me pause. I don’t doubt that he could write something compelling that speaks to me as both a black man and Superman fan, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a tiny bit more worried than I was from the jump about how the movie itself will play out.

Independence Day.

That black actor is going to have some tough skin, but then imagine how warm he'll be received by who really matters. You remember how Black Twitter showed up and showed out for Black Panther, if they produce this right and give us a good movie just imagine how much they'll praise Black Superman.

But again this is WB so let me not get ahead of myself, but you catch my drift.

Yeah that never sits right with me. I mean granted, you love who you love, but like you said the representation of black people in love in these blockbusters are scarce. That is something that needs to change as Hollywood continues to be more "inclusive".

We need more black power couples.

Good news, sounds like Heard may have been fired from Aquaman 2.

Bad news, it sounds like the reason isn't for the good reason, but for sexists reasons....

A black writer can't have a connection to Superman? The original, most recognizable, most ubiquitous superhero ever?

My god.

I was hoping Coates would go for something more challenging than jump from Marvel’s version of Superman to the OG.

I am all for diversity in storytelling— but Coates and Green Lantern would be manna on heaven for me.

Apparently she gained a few pounds; enough to violate the clause in the contract she signed about her staying within a certain weight class so that she would be able to be in good enough shape after training to achieve the look they want. I don’t think anyone knows enough about the deal to call it sexist or not (not calling you out), but I’m curious if anyone else had that clause in their contract and if they also would’ve been fired for breaking it.

I’m slightly more inclined to assume that it wasn’t that serious of a weight gain and that they were looking for a reason to fire her.

Enough already, I get the picture.

You're right. I hope everything works out for the movie and everyone involved. They are really scarce.

Superman isn’t a white character. He is a default character. He is a alien for gods sake. He is portrayed as a white male because he was created in 1939. This isn’t hard.
True, but doesn't stop certain people from having epic meltdowns. The number of grown men that were upset because of the little mermaid casting still baffles me to date.

Thing is....why did Jon Stewart’s name immediately come to mind as a character for Coates to work on instead of Superman? Is it because he’s black like him so you immediately assumed that he should be working with said character because of that very reason? Why not just say Green Lantern? For all we know he could be interested in Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner.

This is like if I say I’m confused as to why an Asian writer was writing a new Thor movie and then I say, “I wonder why they can’t write a Amadeus Cho Hulk movie instead?” Because, y’know...they’re Asian so maybe they should only work on characters who look like them. The problem with your post is that you’re kind of implying non-whites should be only be working on characters who are the same race as them. Now I know you probably didn’t mean it to come off that way, but your post did have that unfortunate implication.
