Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 57

Stoked to see Jameela in a Marvel project. Love her as an actor and an activist.

Regarding the debate over the quality of superhero TV shows… I agree that Daredevil really raised the bar. BUT there is still the glaring issue of the Hand subplot in season 2. Damn it, if they just had avoided the Hand crap altogether that show would have been perfect. You could have still had Stick involved but they were so committed to building up to their stupid Defenders crossover (and centering the whole thing on Iron Sh**) that they compromised their best show to shoe-horn that crap in. And that’s a shame because some of the other stuff in season 2 with Frank is some of the best material in the entire series.

I was skeptical seeing Jameela credited as an actor, knowing her as a presenter first, but she was great in 'The Good Place' and a fine addition to any cast.

The Hand plot in Daredevil season 2 is the weakest arc in the show for sure, but the lukewarm Defenders actually made me appreciate it more in hindsight. It's quite effectively macabre in places. They are actually creepy ninjas in that for the most part, while in Defenders it's just your standard boss and generic goons. Also on rewatch I found it took up less of the season than I remembered.

Got my Black Widow tickets for the Thursday night showing in IMAX. Really excited

Black Widow looks to get the highest American opening weekend since the pandemic started.

‘Black Widow’ Advance Tickets Go On Sale; New Clip From Movie Drops – Deadline

Despite the movie’s simultaneous availability on Disney+ Premier for $29.99 with its theatrical release, box office sources still believe the pic has a chance to open to $70M+. The question becomes how its legs will hold up as those who relish in the film the first time, can just go buy it on Disney+ when they get home to watch it a second time (that is if they’re a subscriber).

Black Widow was voted the top film to see in a recent Fandango poll of must-see movies this summer. We’ll let you know if tickets sales go crazy on the Cate Shortland-directed movie which was expected to kick off summer last year during the first weekend of May.

I have a lot of respect for Daredevil but it's hard for me to agree that the show or the first season was the one of the best TV shows ever when shows like Breaking Bad, The Wire, and Better Call Saul exist. There's a few too many filler episodes in DD as well as some cringey acting from Foggy. In fact Foggy really hurts the series for me.

As for best superhero TV series, I get why some may think that, but in my opinion Watchmen is top dog.

Watchmen and Daredevil are the superhero shows to beat. Everything else is a step below.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, Agent Carter S1 was a really good season of comic book television. Not talked about enough

Watchmen is definitely one worthy of that top 5 status.

If I had to tier them, just based on general consensus :

Great Superhero shows (that transcend the genre):
Daredevil
The Boys
Legion
Watchmen
*Hopefully LOKI

Good Superhero shows:
Invincible
Umbrella Academy
WandaVision
*Superman and Lois (for now)
Doom Patrol
Preacher
Jessica Jones

Average Superhero shows:
iZombie
Black Lightning
Star Girl
Falcon and Winter Soldier
Harley Quinn
Agent Carter
Swamp Thing
Lucifer

Mediocre and/or Disappointing Superhero shows:
Titans
Defenders
Luke Cage
Jupiter's Legacy
Agents of Shield
Runaways
Smallville
Gotham
Modok
Flash
Supergirl
Legends of Tomorrow
Arrow
Constantine
Human Target
Helstrom
Cloak and Dagger
Punisher
Gifted

Poor/Terrible Superhero shows:
Iron Fist
Inhumans
Batwoman

Superhero television is generally quite mediocre, but with streaming.. the tide is shifting. A lot of upcoming projects with solid potential.

The best superhero show is Doom Patrol, hands down.

Watchmen, Invincible, the Boys, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and WandaVision are all excellent, too.

Of the ones I've personally seen (which doesn't include, for instance, Legion, Cloak and Dagger, Inhumans, Swamp Thing, Superman and Lois among some others) pretty much all the rest are decent fun but nothing amazing.

With the major exceptions of Gotham (which is somehow entertaining, but definitely not good), Titans (which is just dire) and the entire CW verse (every example of which I've seen is wildly inconsistent, idiotically repetetive, tonally incomprehensible and just one massive waste of potential).

In terms of live-action comic book TV adaptations, Watchmen is the best to me. It's the only one I'd hold up next to the best seasons of television, period. And on the live-action CBM show rankings, it would be followed by Daredevil S3 then Jessica Jones S1 and Doom Patrol.

Those are in a league of their own, imo. But other quality stuff like that, WandaVision, Legion (both of which further represent more daring, experimental remixes a la Watchmen and Doom Patrol), Swamp Thing, Superman & Lois (the latter two representing the more traditional, straight-forward adaptations a la Daredevil and the Arrowverse) suggest the genre as a whole is moving forward on TV in a big way. Tbh, I'm not really here for what I call the "offbrand deconstruction" adaptations (which might as well be its own genre at this point) offered by shows like The Boys, Invincible, Umbrella Academy, etc. But a lot of people are, and that seems to be moving forward in quality as well. It's a good time to be superhero fan who prefers TV over movies, that's for sure.

Agent Carter season 1 I think is the best of the Network TV superhero shows ever. Again, I do think mostly those shows don't compete with the good shows offered on Netflix, HBO, FX, etc. Those are largely just another level above the standard TV show counterparts.

I haven't watched The Boys. I don't know how much I would love it even if I watched it. Doesn't feel like the type of series that will give me what I want out of superhero entertainment. Glad it is there for those who love it though

Am I the only one who thinks Aquaman 2 and Shazam: Fury of the Gods will switch release dates? The fact that the former has not begun filming (and likely as VFX heavy as the original), while the latter is makes me wonder.

Definitely agreed about AC S1 being the best network TV superhero show.

Homelander is basically the only reason to watch the Boys IMO. Really interesting character and a great performance but otherwise fine to skip I'd say.

This talk about Superman & Lois makes me want to give that a watch this weekend. I remember enjoying the first episode more than I expected but still having reservations.

Still need to catch Legion as well. One of those shows that completely missed me at the time but has never left my radar.

Karl Urban is a fantastic reason to watch "The Boys." He's diabolical. I'm sure many will say the same about Jenson in S3. Of course, Antony Starr is the MVP.

I agree that Agent Carter Season 1 was solid, by network TV standards. Season 2 seemed to be a mixed bag though, given how it was received. It was a nice little nod that Feige used the Jarvis from that show in the MCU proper.

Speaking of Agent Carter.. for those who paid very close attention to the Loki premiere, that's a potential easter egg with some big implications.

I didn't really care for The Boys when I watched the first batch of episodes. It felt like a more cohesive production from Zack Snyder IMO, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. Glad to see Karl Urban still working though, loved him since he was Julius Caesar on Xena/Hercules.

But yeah for me it's still Daredevil reigning supreme as the best superhero TV show. It just hits all the points: great characterization and character development, amazing fights (the fight choreographers should be used on every MCU production), and you actually care about the characters you're watching from the heroes to the villains (except Foggy, but every show needs a Xander I guess).

With Disney+, I hope Feige greenlights a lot of X-Men shows in the future.

I'd rather see MCU X-Men movies done properly. There's nothing wrong with the limited Disney+ series approach, but I want to see X-Men done similarly to the 1990s animated series.

The Fox-men films were low-key and took a lot of the fun out of the source material. Not that some were really good -- Days of Future Past was excellent and I still enjoy the first X-Men.

Christopher Reeve. Definitely Christopher Reeve.

Also, as far as TV goes, I'd take season 1 of the 1966 Batman show over any network TV superhero show, and most of the streaming/cable ones.

Right there with you friend.

I want mutant melodrama, I want the costumes, everything that Fox didn't give us. But with the sheer amount of characters they have, I wouldn't be opposed to having mainline MCU X-Men movies and Disney+ spinoffs as tie-ins to the movies.

I'm glad you guys loved Loki. I was looking forward to the show, but I lost my mom on Tuesday. I haven't felt like watching anything since then, hopefully my interest will be back next week.
Sorry to hear about that Shuri. My condolences to you and your family. I hope you're holding up okay. :hrt:
