Rise of the Beasts Transformers: Rise of the Beasts General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

Bay’s first Transformers is legit good. It definitely feels like a modern (well, 2007 modern lol) update of the 80s Amblin films with some Bay action thrown in.

The rest of the sequels suck as they removed any of that Amblin feel.

Bumblebee is good too. But as stated, smaller scale.

This looks like it could be a throwback to the first movie. Which would be a good thing. There was a lot of goodwill coming off it and why the lesser sequels did as well as they did.

The first film feels like a mash up of several different popular, sci-fi films. The first act is ET (main character befriends lost alien being) second act is Terminator 2 (antagonistic pursuer disguised as law enforcement, characters going on the run) and the last act is Independence Day (secret hidden underground base reveals secret history and alien find from which all human technology is derived from, ends in full-on alien invasion). It’s like if you took all of those things, gave it a bit of that Amblin magic, shot it like a oversaturated, sweaty porn film, and voilà, you get Transformers 2007.

The first film also definitely thrived on and benefited from the novelty of its groundbreaking special effects and seeing all of the cool transformations of the Transformers onscreen for the first time. The “Arrival on Earth” scene forever lives in my mind rent free.

After that, the novelty starts to wear off definitely and each subsequent film lacks those qualities, thus the diminishing returns and lowering quality of each sequel. Bumblebee definitely recaptures some of that magic, but more paired down and focused, and without any of the gross sexist and racist elements.

I still maintain the first Bay Transformers movie is a damn good movie. I got enjoyment out of the sequels, but they couldn’t come close to the original.

Bumblebee was awesome too.

I think Dark of the Moon amongst the Bay films, came closest to matching the first. The things that drop it are some uncompelling "action" scenes that went way too long and believe it or not I think the film really missed Megan Fox.

So, people over on the TFW2005 forums are losing their minds (i.e. — overreacting, par for the course) over a spoiler related to a post-credit scene that sets up something for the next film.

Okay, here it is:

(Anyone else wanting to avoid spoilers, absolutely do not read if you don’t want to be spoiled and want to go into the movie surprised)

So, the post-credit scene involves Noah, the main human character of this film, getting recruited by G.I. Joe., which, from stuff that I’ve been reading online, could set up the sequel as a Transformers/G.I., Joe crossover.

Originally, it was supposed to be Sector 7 recruiting Noah, but they decided to change it just a few weeks ago, probably to distance themselves even more from Michael Bay films’ continuity. Also, Hailee Steinfeld’s character Charlie Watson was supposed to make a reappearance in another credit scene, but that was cut from the film. But, in a recent interview they did (which was supposed to be released after the film came out), which is where all this info comes from, it was mentioned that they wanted to bring her back, possibly for the sequel.

I think what people on the TFW 2005 forum are worried about is that G.I. Joe could potentially take the focus away from the Transformers characters. Also, Lorenzo di Bonavantura keeps contradicting himself and won’t keep his mouth shut about about whether or not this film is in continuity with the Michael Bay films.

However, it seems that in spite of all that, Steven Caple, Jr., as a fan and a good filmmaker, managed to honor a lot of Transformers history and make a good film. If he can do that for this film, he can do it for G.I. Joe in the mix in the sequel. If anything, they’ll most likely just play a supporting role just like the main human characters of this film did.

I don’t know. I’m just gonna wait and see how it pans out.

Huh. I know the idea has been circling around for years, but I wouldn't be opposed to it actually happening, just as long at it's done well.

Any word on whether or not Unicron is actually a one-time thing in this movie?

He is supposed to be the big bad of this trilogy, most likely culminating in the third and final film being our heroes against him. I’ve heard/read he is briefly shown/teased/referenced to set up a final, full-on appearance in the last film, so this film is not the last we’ll see or hear of him.

With all of the references to the 1986 animated film in this film, I wonder if the final film of this trilogy would basically be an semi-adaptation of Transformers: The Movie.

Rise of the Beasts Expands the Transformers Movie Universe Beyond What We've Seen Before

Caple is not signed on to direct another Transformers (yet), but he has no shortage of ideas for where to take the franchise next.

“I introduced Unicron. I was dying for Unicron to show up in a live-action movie, and to be honest, I’ll put it out there, I want him to be across the next two or three films, a really huge major villain,” he says.

Caple also wants to expand the Transformersuniverse in a far more literal sense.

“I feel like we spent a lot of time on Earth, and it’d be interesting to see what else is out there, there are different Transformers and different planets, and we just need the right vehicle and the right team to really do it,” he says. “I feel like this was the foundation of that, of something really special.”

Except with GI Joe featuring, I guess. :hehe:

Bay had the same interesting concept in Age Of Extinction (and to a lesser extent, The Last Knight), but of course dropped the ball hard and made crap up as he went along so I'd be curious to see it done in much more capable hands.

I actually didn't like DOTM at first but it has grown on me. I agree with your criticisms though and do also think the movie missed Fox. Her baiting Megatron to fight Sentinel would have made a lot more sense than someone who had never met Megatron before.

I'm really curious to see if Caple has any plans on bringing back Megatron and the other classic Decepticons in this new trilogy.

If he keeps the 90s setting, I say say screw any concerns about mass shifting and let Soundwave turn into a boombox even just for one scene.

So, spoiler tag so don't click if you don't want to know obviously, but
there's been a leaked CG model of Megatron in this movie from a toy box. No idea how he'll even fit into Rise Of The Beasts, but it's quite close to his G1 design just with a creepy af face.

I did see that actually. I believe that was an unused design from Bumblebee? Regardless, I'd be happy with it if he looks anything like that if and when he comes back.

Seeing Peter Cullen admit he had so much fun working on this brings a smile on my face, especially since he wasn’t treated well for Bumblebee.

Just from the little snippets of voice acting, we hear from him in the trailers/tv spots, you can definitely tell the difference between his performance in Bumblebee and this. His line reads just seem more natural and organic. In the latter, he was basically matching another voice actor’s temp performance, and you can definitely tell.

On another note, man, a user at the TFW 2005 forums named AutobotBurnout has absolutely no current love for the direction of the franchise and Lorenzo di Bonavantura. They are so determined to hate anything that comes out, were determined to hate this film from the get-go, and despite the very positive reception it has gotten, are still going into it not liking it and convinced it will be bad. Absolutely no positivity whatsoever.

I've frequented message boards for 20 years and have never stuck around long on any of the Transformers ones that I've signed up for simply because of how negative the fan base is sometimes. Ironically though I found TFW 2005 boards to be one of the better ones lol.

I think you're dwelling a bit too much over what folks at TFW2005 think, WiseGuy. It does not good to hyperfocus and let yourself be annoyed by opinions of cynical fans at the end of the day, what matters is whether or not you end up enjoying the movie.

Oh, yeah, don’t get me wrong, I’m going to enjoy the movie whether someone else likes it or not.

It’s just that the detractors and their opinions are like annoying little pests. They occasionally fly around and annoy you, and you swat at them it, but just can’t seem to get rid of them. They leave you alone for a little bit, you’re minding your own business, and then they come back to bother you again out of nowhere.

I really do try my very best to ignore them, but it’s really hard to not let them get under my skin.

I get that, which is why I usually avoid that forum or just anyone who provides toxic cynical movie discussions in general. Saves me plenty of headaches and able to have enjoyable talks with folks who don't do any of that.
