Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Part 2

The great thing about performance capture really is that you're not limited by what you look like, you can just forget about it & play someone who looks nothing like you.

^Agreed, you can actually totally turn into another character, its a great tool and I am glad more movies are starting to use it.

The whole thing was very nuanced and three-dimensional as well. Every character in Rise of the Planet of the Apes was very one-note and shallow except for Caesar to me, but here nobody was a caricature.

Even Koba had that moment where he points to all his scars and calls them "human work", where you felt kind of sorry for him for a moment and understood why he was so hateful.

And Dreyfus could have come across as a villain, but he never really did to me, and Oldman was great in the scene where his computer comes back on.

In Rise I thought Maurice and Buck had a bit of personality about them, as did Koba, you knew he was capable of evil for sure. But in Dawn they all got a bit more development, probably because the movie was longer. I personally wanted a bit more Maurice and Rocket but thats just a minor gripe I have.

I dont think anyone really came across as a villain, they all had good motivations for doing what they did. As Caesar told his son, Koba only learned hatrid from humans, and he couldnt shake it, even after years of not seeing them.

Dreyfus had lost his kids and never wanted to lose anyone again, they are both understandable motivations and its a credit to the movies writing that we feel sympathy for every character there.

About Koba, he started getting realy villainous at the 3rd part of the film, his actions against Caeser, then killing his oun kind and only caring to execute humans made his him a bit less intersting to me, becoming more like the kind of villain we see in movies, except it was a monkey instead of a human.

Aside from that, it was pretty good, one of the strongest movies this year, possibly the best one i've watched so far, next film will have a lot to live up to.

^I thought that was a great progression for Koba though, something obviously snapped in his mind, once he tried to kill Caesar all bets were pretty much off, so while I was shocked at some of his actions, I was never surprised by them, he started on a slippery slope once he turned on the society the apes had built and just progressed from there.

IMO he was a great 'villain.'

That really was the entire point though. Just because he was ape, did not mean he was not subject to the same ills as humans.

So I saw the film and I'm sorry to say that I thought it was terrible. It was poorly directed, had bad CGI, shallow characterization, uninteresting plot and completely devoid of heart and emotion.

Okay I'm just screwing with everyone, so like the opposite of all that and bam you gots my opinion.

Wow, ISS. I thought you were going for Iconoclast of The Year with that first part. :woot:

I found that the balance of the characters strengths and weaknesses are what made things feel so real and visceral in this film. Koba was a villain. But he was an understandable one. That understanding doesn't take away from what his justifiable anger wrought on both apes and humans. But he's not evil just to be evil. And Dreyfuss too, is a totally understandable character. There aren't too many Mary Sue/Gary Stu moments in the film for most of the characters. I am very interested to see what comes next for sure.

I had to do it INC, I was in a mischievous mood.

Anyway I didn't find Koba to ever be 2 dimensional. I adored the performance.

Koba's later actions did work withing the context of what they wanted to tell, but i was actualy interested at first to see how they would handle a villain who loves and respects the main character, and won't kill his oun kind, but is ready to hurt humans at the first chance he gets. I guess that would probably be too tricky to pull though, i'm glad we got such a good execution of this story.

Any guess of what the conflict in the next film should be? Caeser's the protagonist of these films, so i doubt we'll see the timeline of the original and Burton films anytime soon, which is actualy a good thing. But should we at some point move past Caeser? I'm quite sure the Apes civilization will still take some time to progress more.

Dawn has surpassed the Domestic take of the last film, anyone with better knowledge over the box office numbers can explain if it still has more places to open and if it still has the chance of surpassing the gross of Rise? Because the overseas number so far seems way too small.

You had me going there for a second Sundance. I was legitimately wondering, WTF!!! :funny:

I hated Koba for everything he forced on his fellow apes and humanity.

Koba is totally hatable. He did ruin everything. He just couldn't get pass his rage and that makes him tragic, as well as a *****e of course.

Kebbell and the animators did a great job bringing him to life.

I loved Koba and the whole idea and realization that the apes are the same as humans. That no matter what Caesar tried to do, eventually ape civilization would end up like humanity. Causing it's own downfall.

But the humans were preparing to wipe out the apes.

Koba wasn't completely wrong.

Yeah, a fantastic character, brought to life by the actor and animators.

Uh, that is not what the humans were doing. They were preparing to go to war if the Apes decided to not allow them to get the power they needed to live. Koba gave no such option, and in the process turned on his own.

Yea the humans weren't going to attack the Apes. They were just stockpiling weapons. They came to understanding. "Human home. Ape home".

Koba let his mistrust and hatred get the better of him. The thing that makes him more compelling is... you can't really blame him for feeling like that. In a way i think Caesar could have shown better leadership and understanding towards Koba though.

I can totally blame for his feelings. Was he treated terribly? Yep. As were many of the Apes were were alive before the 10 year gap. Koba is the one who made the decision to do what he did.

For Koba it wasn't about humans. It wasn't about the danger he believe they posed. It was about Koba being in control. Koba crashes the gate and doesn't kill everyone. He locks them up. He wants to punish them and show others who is in control.

True, it is for selfish reasons in the end.

But i can't blame him for hating humans. All he ever knew was a surgeons scalpel. Caesar had been shown the better side to humans. I wonder if Caesar would have told Koba about his experiences growing up with Will.

I don't blame Koba for hating humans, just like I don't blame humans for fearing the Apes or Caesar's reaction when being confronted by humans for the first time in a decade.

But Koba's hate for humanity was not the real issue. He used the rediscovery of humans to his advantage. Look at what he does to Blue Eyes, how he manipulates him. Heck, he basically signed the death sentence for the entire nation.

Dreyfus himself states that if the damn isn't working in so many days the humans will wipe out the apes.

This movie was off the hizzay. I liked it more than the 1968 original. Sue me. :o

I would give it a 9.5 out of 10.
