Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Part 2

^I'm not following why you wouldn't be able to award motion capture actors. Clearly they would have to implement rules and regulations (just like they do for every category in the academy). Its also clear that it is not fair to lump them alongside live action actors since, as you said, animators sometimes add to a mo-cap performance; therefore giving them their own category while implementing proper criteria would be best. They could call it Best Digital Performance (or something similar) and yes it would award both the performer as well as the SFX team behind the work. I think a great digital performance is more than just photorealistic animation. The performer and the SFX team have to work harmoniously to create a digital character that feels authentic. Sure, the actor's performance might be used as a reference, but it still requires an understanding of human emotions and facial expressions in order for animators to properly convey this onto the screen.
tell this to an animator and i bet he will punch you in the face. i am no joking. :woot:a good animator knows everything about human. animators are in a way actors .

should they create a new category? hard to say. then they also need to create a category for best prosthetic performance.

then of course you have a problem. you dont have every year 5 good digital performances.

An animator would punch me in the face for saying their job requires them to understand human expressions in detail? I'm confused...what is so offensive about that?

Also, I don't think prosthetic performance is the same as digital character. As you personally said, animators can add to a digital performance and its difficult to tell. That doesn't happen with prosthetic. I do agree that it might be too soon but at the rate things are going it might be something to consider in the future.

maybe we will get that scene with the home release?

Eh. The reshot ending feels more true and consistent with what came before that. Maybe they could use that scene for a sequel down the road?

Because it's like telling a computer programmer he should use a keyboard, or a welder he needs to wear goggles.

It's such a gray area of actor/animator, and still very much a niche, that it really is hard to compare Serkis to any other actor. I'd agree that Serkis should be recognized soon by the Academy, but it might be better just to issue a Special Oscar, the Academy has done it before, than worry about him competing against live action competition.

The story is good, & great character
Maybe if i look ending james franco look shock, how he's ape can speak...can't wait this sequel come out...awesome movies and must have win in oscar:woot:

I think it's reasonable to consider certain motion capture people to be "artists"

Motion captures like a form of art. It's like expressing the body

Don't most actors take some sort of course that involves them doing some of the things motion capture people do?

Act like a leaf in the wind sort of deal.

is the team that did this poster mentally challenged? they used an example where the facial expression on Caeser doesnt match the facial expression on Serkis.

which of cours is part of the problem. what you see in this poster is how it looks 70% the time. and its also similar to Avatar. a lot of times thedirector and CGI team change the acting for the CGI character. so who should get the credit?

^ My thoughts exactly. Not only that but thats not even the best effects shot from the film. Very bad choice indeed.

Yeah, that's a poster that highlights the importance of the animation team. It's almost like they mixed up their special effects promotional image with their acting promotional image.

Can't wait to get this on Blu-Ray...one of the best surprises i've had in a long time. Great flick.

anyone know of any good deals that going on next week with the release, like any exclusives(steelbook cases, alternate cover art) ? Usually best buy has something exclusive..

I'm getting it for Christmas,I didn't know what I wanted for Christmas But then saw the add on different sites..So I told my wife to get me the Blu-Ray version as my present!!!

Even if you got punched in the face, from the animators I've met in my lifetime, you wouldn't feel anything.

Anyone seen the features on the disc? are they in-depth and interesting, or just a bunch of 10 minute quick overviews?

Some of them are 10 minutes but that doesn't mean they're quick overviews. They talk about Andy Serkis's role as Ceaser and while it was quite in-depth without getting too technical or deep, I'd guesstimate it to be around a 10 minute feature.

Anyway.....I gotta cookie for ya! I gotta cookie for ya!!!

For the sequel I see:

-Some time has past.
-Apes have multiplyed and keeps multiplying.
-All the apes talk, they have actual conversations.
-A disease has spread that has killed most of the human population.
-Huge civil war with apes and what's left of the human species.

^Yeah, Koba and Caesar are definately going to come into conflict at some point in the sequel, thats a given, it'll be interesting to see were they go with humanity though.

Also an interesting thought would be will the apes have charges brought against them for the murder of some humans during their rampage through San Fran? I doubt they would be let off with such things as that.

So which sequel number will be when the human astronauts come back to earth to discover the whole planet is covered in apes? Well since the Mars mission went missing I presume they'll be returning in the future to foreshadow the first Charlton Heston movie and find the whole world covered by bi-pedal intelligent apes.

If they make this a trilogy then I could see that happening as the plot for the third. I wonder what voice cast we will have for the apes in the sequel.

IF they have a trilogy..I think&hope it'll be with part 2 focused on the virus and start of the civil war between Apes&Humans and 3 being Apes fully dominating and Human rebels fighting while rest of the surviving ones going underground while possibly mutating(a possible tie-in with BOTPTA)

The Heston connection could be used as the last shot/scene of part 3,End the trilogy with"1000 Years Later"then show a shot of SF or parts of the world looking very similar to the original film..Then pan the camera up to the sky and have a spacecraft crash into water then fading out to the credits!!!

That way IF Fox makes a new trilogy or re-boot then the new director&writers can do their Heston version IF they want and connect it to the trilogy to make their job easier since everything would be established..Or make their own work and the ending in the trilogy could be used as a homage as it was with the first film's reference!!

And meanwhile there's many possibilities to use those"1000 Years Later"for comics/novels/TV series/Toy-lines and Video games!

anyone else feel this film's score is highly underrated i love this track so uplifting

I went to the Fox Studio screening with questions and answers after the film with the composer Patrick Doyle. He's hilarious, he likes to use the F word a lot! He has a thick Scottish accent. Speaking of Scotland, he's doing the score for Brave. He scored four films in 2011, with Thor included. That last cue in Rise of the Planet of the Apes he wrote on the spot, the version that is in the film! :wow: When Caesar gives cookies to the other apes Doyle recorded in has people singing 'have a cookie'. That was funny when he explained it. Then on the big screen at the Zanuck theater they played the clip from the bonus features about the have a cookie bit, hilarious! God that theater had great acoustics, and a great picture! Patrick Doyle also went into how he was given sound effects from the sound department to add into his score and him working with the sound effects department collaboratively where the music accompanied the sounds and vice versus. :wow:

I recently watched all Ape movies and i am still shocked about what i saw and wanted to share.

What's funny is that i had never watched the old movies before, only the Tim Burton flick years ago, and i always thought of them as a campy series full of the American typical hero sh*** that saves the day in the end and everyone is cheering happily.

What i discovered with those films is that they are full of depressing moments, drama and they got some balls. They are an amazing social commentary to the racist and militaristic society we have today, just like the Romero's Zombie flicks.

Just when i thought the ending in the first one was shocking, in the second the mutated tele pathetic humans torture the hero and in the end a nuclear bomb goes off. And as if those weren't brutal enough, in the 3rd one Cornelius and Zira die in cold blood like dogs.

Finally seeing the Rise also, i must say this is one of the most deeply thought provoking and serious franchises ever. Can't wait to see where they will go with the sequel next.

Well beat me over the head and call me Sally! I actually really dug this film.

It perfectly uses mo-cap technology. It's not a brillaint film because Franco and Pinto's characters are underwritten and the actors give very bland performances. And the story moves a little too quickly for it's own good but the story is actually good despite being very simple. Serkis is brillaint as always in this type of role and makes the movie. It's just a good time and the last 40 or so minutes is fantastic and the movie is also quite touching at points. I was almost in tears at the end. After I watched it on DVD I watched it again the next day and I almost never do that. I actually plan on watching it again.

Rating: 8 or 8.5/10

One of the most intriguing blockbusters of the past 10 years.
