Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Part 2

Its still just a matter of the design for me. He's just less authentically ape like in design that the other apes. I understand why they went that rout thouth and thankfully they toned it down a bit in tweaking his design and aging him for this film.

I loved the aging. He looked so rugged. So badass.

One more thing. I think Caesar's overall look is suppose to invoke the original films apes. So yes, I completely agree he doesn't look as authentic as the other apes. But he also has my favorite look.

In the first film in particular he just came off as a lot less impressive than Maurice. His design in the new film is a lot better executed.

The facial design for Caesar's wife Corneila was kind of weird. I guess its just the fact that along with the nurses, she's the first ape we see with what appears to be styled hair. With her design I definitely see hints to the old apes makeup.

Also I think there were definitely more scenes with her originally. Judy Greer mentioned in interviews filming a lot more than what made it to the screen.

Maurice is one of the most amazing CGI creations I have seen. Presented with an image of Maurice, I think many, if not most wouldn't realize he is CGI.

Maurice's probably my favorite of the Apes, i hope only for his best in the upcoming movies.

there were a couple of things that i didnt like inthis movie and why probably the first one was better.

i didnt like the fact that apes started the war. or at least humans should have also been willing to wipe the apes out despite the fact that the dam was working.

the virus immune thing seemed kinda off. suck a deadly virus that wipes out almost entire human race and people suddenly have immunity ove it, while those people were born before the virus came out. it should have taken a few generations to build immunity (i think. not an expert on this).

the monkeys being able to talk. now ceaser and koba being able to talk is ok, but in 10 years they know how to use grammer and present and past tence is a bit too fast. would have been better if they talked but instead of saying apes will go to war, just apes go war. more grammer incorrectly.

It may have to do with their blood, it happens with some diseases, where some people seem to be immune for some reason, it's an idea that has actualy been used before in media if i'm not mistaken.

Some apes like Maurice did show interest in improving their inteligence, so i guess 10 years was more than enough for them to build on their grammer a bit.

That's kind of basic biology though. There's enough variability in the human race that even really deadly diseases don't effect everyone. Some people that survived the Black Death in Europe were simply lucky enough to not be exposed but a certain percentage were actually genetically immune and un-effected. There's evidence that same gene allows for a certain amount of resistance against HIV in European populations today.

Caesar is definitely more humanized in his appearance and expressions, but I thought it made sense with his background. He was raised with humans. He didn't even know any other apes until the enclosure, and he was an adult by then.

This movie was off the hizzay. I liked it more than the 1968 original. Sue me. :o

I would give it a 9.5 out of 10.

Same score I gave it as well, great film, havent been able to stop thinking about it.

Maurice's probably my favorite of the Apes, i hope only for his best in the upcoming movies.

I would say, other than Caesar, yeah Maurice is my favourite, loved him in the 1st movie (which is still great BTW, watched it yesterday), but it was even better to see him get some more development in the sequel. I actually wish we would have gotten more, its one of my minor gripes with the movie.

The scene in the damn were Koba throws the son on the floor and then goes to attack Malcom and him and Maurice stands in the way was one of the best scenes of the movie though IMO.

Anybody else obsessed with the tracking shot on the tank during the battle?

Maurice is great. He gives off the wise old man vibe in the first one, so I thought him being the teacher in the second was awesome, and I loved him bonding with Alexander.

He definitely didn't have enough of a part though. I wanted more Maurice.

It's glorious, I was legitimately in awe.

I think that shot, the shot in my avvy from The Winter Solider, and the

((GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY SPOILERS))
[BLACKOUT]Shot of Gamora floating in space[/BLACKOUT]

are my favorite shots of the year.

Yep, again, its one of my few gripes with the movie, that Maurice wasnt in it enough, just wish he would have had a scene or two more.

My only other gripe is them not showing [BLACKOUT]Rockets reaction to finding out Koba killed Ash[/BLACKOUT].

This is one of the best movies of the year. I had never seen rise of the apes before has I wasn't interested in seeing it but I watched it for the first time today has I wanted to watch it after seeing dawn of the apes. Dawn of the apes is amazing. After watching rise of the apes for the first time today I thought it was good but dawn of the apes was defectly a better movie then rise of the apes. The action is dawn of the apes was a lot better and I wasn't expecting the one ape to shoot cersar just a great movie!

This movie finally opened here last week so I watched yesterday and really loved it. I would give it a 8 or 9 out of 10.

The CGI is pretty much flawless. Really stunning.

I was shocked when
Koba shot Caesar, I really really thought he would be dead now
.

When the Apes attack the city at night is probably my fave scene in the movie. Stunning.

That is the beauty of it. Everyone assumes Gary Oldman's character will start the war, because "Rise" established in this new franchise the apes are the more "noble" and just species (though that is in the original too if you actually seriously consider Taylor's actions and the implicit cultural horror of the first movie's ending).

But as with any "stalemate" situation where two cultures or different groups of people try to share the same space, there will be bad actors and war hawks on either side. The movie is not "apes are good, humans are evil" like the first one kind of simplistically implied. As with almost any war or conflict, there are actors on both sides that push for violence and conflict based on prejudices, such as Koba, who proves far more militaristic than Oldman's character.

As for the immunity, some people genetically could have an immunity to it. This is a virus that apparently wiped out 99% of the world's population or something absurd like that. Even the catastrophic Bubonic Plague of the early 14th century only wiped out roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of Europe (though some communities lost up to half their populations). That is still end of the world type horror, but there were people who survived that at much higher numbers than this film's rather grim scenario.

I just wanted to also ask the belated question of how do people rank the overall franchise(s) films in regards to Apes?

For me it goes:

The Good
1. Planet of the Apes (1968)
2. Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971)
3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

The O.K.
4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
5. Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
6. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

And the Awful
7. Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001)
8. Battle of the Planet of the Apes (1973)

For a franchise with so many films, there is a consistency to most of it. And other than the awful Burton movie, all of them end on serious downers and cynicism. It is actually quite the rarity in modern science fiction these days, especially on a big budget scale like the most recent films.

I'm kinda saddened at the small-ish box office returns for this film.

It's almost at $200 million domestic. That's nothing to sneeze at.

This is one of those movies in which I turned to one of my friends and said "This is great!" while watching it. Still the best film I've seen this year.
